I spent this day sleeping and getting the rest that I badly need. It did help that my medication made me feel very sleepy. Early afternoon, I had to literally force myself to get up to meet Ric. It would be our last date together before I leave next week. He won’t be around this weekend because of a company event he had to attend this weekend. Initially, he wanted to have a light snacks at Jollibee but I had to request him for a place which isn’t jam packed with people as I do not feel that beautiful today. Allergies, remember? Hehe.

So we meet in this cozy cafe and had carbonara, tuna sandwich and cold coffee. When we left the place and was about to board his car, lo and behold! He left his car key inside the car! He called some colleagues for help and upon their arrival, I was able to leave them. He sent me a message a while ago that they’ve finally opened the car and were leaving for Davao in a bit.

I consider myself to be so blessed with the kind of friends that God has been sending my way. I will definitely miss them but one thing’s for sure: no distance can end our friendship. They will always be my friends and I can call on them for anything any time.

My inbox has been bombarded with diet pill reviews. That is how helpful my friends are. They forward those reviews to me when I told them what my OB advised me some weeks back – that the solution to my problem is losing weight. My friends know I am desperate and I am happy that they are very supportive. However, I also have friends who love to eat. And when they’re here for a visit, it is a must that we go out on a date. It’s a weekly thing and there’s no escape. So definitely, project lose weight will commence once we leave this place. And for the project to be successful, I need a lot of self-discipline so wish me luck!

Refining the Signs of Aging

Now that I am older, I seem to be more conscious of how my face looks and how soft my skin is. I have been trying out several moisturizers and lotions. It’s a good thing that I have generous friends who gift me with bottles of lotion every now and then. However, I still need to find the perfect moisturizer for my face. And since I am not getting any younger, I need something that will also help refine the signs of aging. A friend is aware of this so she sent me a prototype 37c reviews for reference and I am reading it right now. Let’s see if it’s worth the investment.

A Rock Star?

I will let you into a secret: I am leaning towards three genres of music these days: religious, dance and rock. Check my iPod, you will know what I mean.

Excited!

Five more days and were off to a new environment and new life. We are all excited and looking forward to experiences that this significant decision to move. Hopefully, my husband already cleaned our room there, and changed the bed mattresses and pillow cases. He knows I like sleeping on fresh and clean bed.

We may be excited but our bags are not packed yet! We still have to sort through the clothes and books. We are planning to bring just enough. Only Bible story for DD so we can buy her new books there. On the other hand, I need to sort through my unread and scrapbooking books and decide which ones to bring. Upon our arrival, we need to invest on cabinets to store our stuff. I can’t wait go shopping for and arranging our room!

Nine Words Women Use

I read this from a cousin’s Facebook notes and I find it hilarious. True? You be the judge. :D

NINE WORDS WOMEN USE

1. Fine: This is the word women use to end an argument when they are right and you need to shut up.
2. Five Minutes: If she is getting dressed, this means a half an hour. Five minutes is only five minutes if you have just been given five more minutes to watch the game before helping around the house.
3. Nothing: This is the calm before the storm. This means something, and you should be on your toes. Arguments that begin with nothing usually end in fine.
4. Go Ahead: This is a dare, not permission. Don't Do It!
5. Loud Sigh: This is actually a word, but is a non-verbal statement often misunderstood by men. A loud sigh means she thinks you are an idiot and wonders why she is wasting her time standing here and arguing with you about nothing. (Refer back to # 3 for the meaning of nothing.)
6. That's Okay: This is one of the most dangerous statements a women can make to a man... That's okay means she wants to think long and hard before deciding how and when you will pay for your mistake.
7. Thanks: A woman is thanking you, do not question, or faint. Just say you're welcome. (I want to add in a clause here - This is true, unless she says 'Thanks a lot' - that is PURE sarcasm and she is not thanking you at all. DO NOT say 'you're welcome' . that will bring on a 'whatever').
8. Whatever: Is a woman's way of saying F-- YOU!
9. Don't worry about it, I got it: Another dangerous statement, meaning this is something that a woman has told a man to do several times, but is now doing it herself. This will later result in a man asking 'What's wrong?' For the woman's response refer to # 3.

Using a rented car may strike you as a remote possibility when you're driving your own vehicle. However, there are many instances when you may have to hire a car and it pays to make sure that your car insurance policy covers the possibility of damage to a rental car when you're driving it. Without proper rental car insurance, that fun trip to Florida may just turn out to be a nightmare.

Collision coverage may seem like a safeguard at first since it applies to any car you drive. However, most car insurance policies treat collision cover as over and above the basic policy in place. Moreover, you will have to pay the deductible before the insurance company compensates you. Comprehensive cover is also treated in a similar fashion.

Your credit card company could be an ideal insurer too. Most credit card companies offer free rental car insurance if you pay for the rental on their card. Even if it isn't free, it could cost you substantially less than what you would get otherwise. A point to be noted here is that the extent and type of coverage offered varies considerably from one company to another, so it would be wiser to check what's on offer before accepting it.

Car rental companies usually offer loss and collision damage waivers which let off the driver in case of an accident. A deductible and some conditions will apply, but it is useful to go in for these covers if you don't already own collision or comprehensive covers. Personal effects kept in the car can also be insured via the rental company.

To sum up, you should take stock of the covers you already have before renting a car. In case you need to buy rental car insurance, check carefully before signing the dotted line to avoid needless double insurance.

Why Math and Poker Must Mix

It doesn't matter where you're playing. It can be in your neighbor's garage. It can be in Atlantic City. It can even be in a virtual casino like Caesars Online. Wherever you're playing the game, one of the few things about Texas Holdem Poker that remains the same is the mathematics of it. Whether you like math or not, understanding the math behind the game is of paramount importance when it comes to playing successfully.

There is a progressive scale of math that is done by effective players of the game. The first level is knowing the basic odds of making your hand. That is calculating the number of outs you have versus the number of unknown cards, versus the number of cards you have yet to see. However, this in and of itself is not sufficient.

Once you have a basic grasp of the odds of making a hand, other quick calculations also need to be done. The probability of your hand happening must be compared to the mathematics of the betting. A bet will always have a ratio that can be compared to previous betting or, in other words, the chips that you have already committed to the game. This ratio must be compared to your odds to understand pot odds.

Beyond pot odds, a prediction of future betting must be understood. Knowing that the betting right now is only a part of things and that future betting may drag you further in (to your advantage or downfall) is called implied odds. Having a full grasp of implied odds will allow you to make the most out of any hand, which often means letting that hand go rather than allowing another player to take more of your chips than you're ready to willingly surrender. For these reasons, math belongs with poker. In brief, it's required to win.

WSOP Player Spotlight: Antoine Saout

Antoine Saout is well known for placing third in the 2009 November Nine, making way for the unlikely showdown between Darvin Moon and Joe Cada. However, Saout has achieved more than that in his poker career, including tying for or setting other prominent records and building a very impressive bankroll.

With his third place finish, Saout is the highest placing Frenchman in the WSOP Main Event. That has led to a poker boom in France, with more players in the country honing their skills. Saout accomplished more than that in 2009, however. As of 2010, he is one of only three players to make it to the final table in the WSOP Main Event and WSOP Europe Main Event during the same year.

There are questions over whether third place was the appropriate position for Saout to finish. With a high chip stack and good hole cards, Saout seemed a likely contestant to be one of the final two players. When Joe Cada went all in against Saout's pocket queens with a pair of threes, it seemed inevitable that it would end with Cada's elimination. However, when a third three hit the flop, Saout took a major loss. This was repeated again when Saout's pocket eights were beaten by a river king, pairing Cada's ace king hand, and leading to Saout's elimination.

While Saout didn't have much experience prior to the 2009 season, his two final table finishes netted him an impressive bankroll that broke $4 million. Saout credits his knowledge of the fundamentals of the game, while many other players site his ability to keep his cool under pressure. Even the unlikely victories of Cada didn't throw Saout too much. If nothing else, his record of calm playing and sound knowledge indicates that he'll continue to see a building bankroll for years to come.

Viagra May Improve Brain Tumor Treatment

A new study at Cedars Sinai Medical Center shows that Viagra may benefit brain tumor patients being treated with Herceptin. Herceptin, an anti-cancer drug, has always had difficulty pinpointing brain tumors because the blood-brain barrier makes it difficult for substances to pass from the body into the brain. The new research, however, shows that Viagra may make the blood-brain barrier more permeable for Herceptin and other drugs.

Dr. Keith Black, who led the research at Cedars Sinai, explains that even the most effective anti-cancer drugs have difficulty treating brain tumors. The blood-brain barrier exists to prevent potentially harmful substances from entering the brain through the bloodstream. When patients have brain tumors, however, this life-saving barrier can become quite threatening as it blocks anti-cancer drugs from reaching their intended targets.

The research scientists are not ready to make any solid claims about how Viagra may benefit human patients, but the studies showed that the drug made the blood-brain barrier more permeable in mice. In fact, when Viagra was combined with Herceptin, it improved survival rates by 20 percent. The scientists found that Viagra allowed twice as much Herceptin to reach the tumor as when the anti-cancer treatment was delivered on its own.

Even though this research is not yet ready for human trials, it hints at an exciting development in the treatment of brain tumors. While most men buy Viagra because they want to overcome the negative effects of erectile dysfunction, it seems that the drug may have an even more noble purpose.

As scientists continue to experiment with these drugs, they hope to find effective ways to breach the blood-brain barrier without compromising the health of patients. It may take a few years before an effective treatment plan is created, but the current research has created significant optimism in the field.

Ramblings on a Friday Evening

I’ve been feeling a wee bit under the weather upon coming home today. I just hope that a dose of ascorbic acid along with a good rest will somehow fight this bug. I can’t afford to be sick especially that a long weekend with DD and some dear friends in a nice place is scheduled. I’ve already bought cookies, biscuits, candies and water for the trip.

We will be leaving very tomorrow and yet, I have not packed our stuff yet. Ack. I am also trying to send DD to sleep because we both need to be up early obviously. To no avail. She had her nap from 2 to 5 PM this afternoon, that is why. Oh well. Wish me luck!

A Wise Investment

One colleague of ours, who has been teaching for almost 30 years retired last March. She is now enjoying her time with her family and occasionally looking after her grandchildren. Early in her life, she was already aware that to buy gold bullion was a good venture and that’s what she did. The value of gold appreciates over time and now, she is about to enjoy the return of her investment. She is now planning to sell her gold bullions to finance her travel plans with her husband who is a retiree too. We wish them the best and can’t wait to see the travel photos!

Today, I opt to stay home to rest and recover from a terrible migraine that I have been nursing since Saturday. No fun at all. And I will be going to an OB-GYN later for a procedure that I need to undergo.

And it’s a Friday once again! Woot! You know how I love weekends. But this time, mine is again loaded, just like the previous weekends that I had. I have a lot of errands and tasks to accomplish but I am going to party first.

Tonight, I will be meeting oooold friends from high school. Two of them came home just this week. One of them has been bragging about her weight loss story and I can’t wait to see the proof! We’ll talk and eat and talk some more. It’s going to be fun!

Also, I

am going to have lunch with Ric. He is one of my BFFs and we promised to see each other every week once he’s home before I leave for Manila. We had a dinner date about a week ago in Davao City with JD at Pizza Hut and at Jollibee two weeks ago here in the city. Now you know, Tere, why dieting is not possible for now. :D

After three years or so, I am so happy to meet a BFF once again. Her name is JD and we've known each other since high school. During my visit in Davao last week, I stayed at their place and I thoroughly enjoyed her company. She accompanied me when I met other friends and we had each other during my checkup and her laboratory tests. As always, we never run out of topics to discuss and stories to share. From getting rid of belly fat to how to read the scriptures effectively -- we got them covered. As usual, we shared stories about our past - the best days of our young lives. if you ask me. We missed all our friends and we are both looking forward to seeing and spending time with some of them next week, upon JD's return here. Oh, I can hardly wait!

I was reading an email regarding whole life insurance quotes when suddenly, my laptop's screen froze. So I did what I usually do - reboot. However, much to my dismay, it did not solve the problem. It just kept on rebooting. It is my fault, really. I have not updated my anti-virus and I plugged my infected USB (assuming that it is already clean).

Thank God for my parents who are always ready to rescue me from distress. My father brought my mother's laptop this morning as requested because I still have tasks to accomplish. And thank God for super techie friends who are always ready to lend a hand no matter what time of the day I call for help. Thanks, Tom!

And so, here I am. Blogging using Mama's savvy, purple laptop while waiting for Tom to fix whatever is broken with my laptop. For years, I have been dreading the day when he says that the only thing to do is to reformat but nah. Now I am ready. :)

Long Weekend

Good morning from my neck of woods!

It’s Labor Day and the feast of St. Joseph the Worker, thus a holiday for us at the university. I am looking forward to this long weekend because I have set it as my purging and packing weekend in preparation for the big move next month. I actually began last night with some of our clothes. I can’t seem to finish one area as I move from one room to another, toys to clothes to books and back to clothes. And when I get tired, I come back here, check my Facebook and emails, read my friends’ Twits and blog. My biggest motivation for this humungous responsibility is my trip to Davao City this coming week so I have to work, work, work because I only have until Monday to finish this task.
